Visual artists Anna Alapuro and Ilkka Väätti met at the Lahti Art School in the 1970s. Numerous trips and artist residencies, both together and individually, in Finland and abroad have brought new ideas into the visual worlds of their artworks.

The publication Matkalla ("On the Road") presents works by Anna Alapuro and Ilkka Väätti that were featured in the exhibition of the same name at the Kajaani Art Museum from February 19 to May 14, 2023. The artworks reflect the couple’s shared journeys and the influences and inspiration they brought back. Although both artists have their own strong visual language and style, their travels have also introduced elements that connect their work. In addition to images of the artworks, the publication includes texts by Pirjo Immonen, Katri Kovasiipi, Anna Alapuro, and Ilkka Väätti, as well as photographs from over the years and various travels.
